Joe Lyman Photography
Find out about the photographer behind most of Allegro's imagery!
One of our favorite things about being a small, local business, is finding other creative, like-minded artists to team up with. Our latest partnership is with talented dance photographer, Joe Lyman.
In was not long ago that Joe first started photographing dance, yet his images have been featured in magazines, catalogs and galleries. In 2003, Joe headed to Lexington, Kentucky with his family to start his career as an equine veterinarian. It was there that he discovered photography, an interest spurred on by the amazing scenery he saw every day on the spectacular horse farms of the Bluegrass. His daughters, both young dancers at the time, asked him to bring them to an outdoor ballet performance at a local vineyard. Joe brought his camera along and sat in the back with a long lens on the camera. The director spied him in the back and asked if he'd be willing to send some shots. They liked the pictures so much they began asking Joe to photograph their performances, and soon the dancers started asking for sessions.
Joe's understanding of dance grew through hours of watching rehearsals before shows to learn the choreography and timing. His family often joked that he spent more time at the ballet than they did. While Joe still photographs horses and equine events, including the once-in-a-lifetime experience of photographing American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown, he devotes almost all of his photography time to dance.
Joe is praised by dancers for his artistic eye, clear direction, endless posing ideas, and uncanny knowledge of dance terminology. He enjoys elevating the artistry of dance by adding his own creativity to each shot. Joe is an expert in portrait photography, whether it be for artistic purposes or for headshots and auditions. He is also equally gifted in performance photography and enjoys on-site and outdoor shooting sessions whenever he can find the time.
The fun story behind the LymanDVM and Allegro Dance Boutique partnership lies in the name. Allegro's owner, Victoria Lyman, and Joe Lyman are half-siblings who grew up in different towns as children. Fast-forward to adulthood, where they found a fun and surprising connection through dance. Victoria had been a life-long dancer and Joe, through his daughters, had become a well-known dance photographer! These two siblings are so excited to share their passion for dance together with the Allegro community.
Joe is available for group, studio, or private photo shoots. Photo sessions should be scheduled at least 3 weeks in advance.
